SUGAR SMASH: THE BOOK OF LIFE

 A match-3 mobile game, created for casual gamers, developed and published by Jam City (f.k.a. SGN).


ROLE:

As the sole game artist / UI artist, I designed and created UI Banners, buttons, badges, dialogues, layouts, concept and in-game art for saga game maps, level backgrounds, social media content, app icons, splash screens, and game pieces. The team had no designated UX designer, so I worked alongside Game Designers to design all wireframes, flows, and layouts for new events and features.


BACKGROUND:

Sugar Smash: The Book of Life is based on the hit 2014 animated movie The Book of Life, directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez, and starring Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, and Channing Tatum. The game had a successful launch due to popularity of the movie, despite the oversaturation of the match-3 genre in mobile gaming.

I joined the team in 2015 right after the game launched, and was the sole artist of the game for most of its life during live-ops. Due to the licensed IP, all art had to be approved by 20th Century Fox Animation. The game is still available to play and remains popular, but it was sunsetted in 2017.


KEY OBJECTIVES:

Increase DAU, player retention, revenue, and new players, all while making visually appealing art for players to look at.

A limited time event where players are challenged to complete a certain amount of levels within a specific time frame to earn special rewards

A limited time event where players are challenged to complete a certain amount of levels in a separate map to earn rewards
